I really don't have time to gripe about something stupid from the pro-life, anti-humanity crowd today. I have a paper, a unit plan assignment, two essays in a take-home test, a traditional in-class test, a project, another project, Summer/Fall enrollment, and a major certification-related test due in relatively short order of each other. Every noun in the preceding sentence can follow the modifier "motherfucking" and accurately represent my feelings towards them all.
But this demands attention.
Future President Barack Obama said that he wouldn't want his young daughters to be "punished" with STDs and/or pregnancy as a result of mistakes which could have been prevented by properly comprehensive sex-ed. So, naturally, some people took that word to mean that he thought of parenthood as punishment. Suddenly the WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE BEAUTIFUL BAAAAAYYBIES vibe resonated through conservatives like a cacophonous fart through the mirrors and stall walls of a cheap public bathroom.
Given my above-stated lack of time, I will let The Onion handle my response to such people.
In all seriousness, though, I would like a child in the future. Preferably a daughter. I would love her, and educate her, and protect her from as many dangers as I could. I would also occasionally remind her that neither she, nor I, nor her mother, nor a Chinese dentist, nor a British queen, and so on, are beautiful and unique snowflakes. Distinct, yes. Sapient, often. Beautiful, perhaps -- her mother and her, certainly. But unique, no.
This world is generally unpleasant for most of humankind and always has been. However, I would show my hypothetical daughter how she might squeeze happiness from what nature provides and from what humans who came before her have done. Regarding sex, I might tell her how enjoyable it may be, and would say how personally fulfilling bearing and/or raising a child may be, yet I would warn her about the consequences of sexual intercourse and the responsibilities absolutely required by adding another human life into a biosphere glutted with them.
And somewhere within the lessons I would impart to her this wisdom gleaned from humanity's great electronic subconscious:
IT'S A VAGINA, NOT A CLOWN CAR.
